Murry Lock Arkansas River
The Murray Lock and Dam, also called Lock and Dam No. 7, is one of the most important stops along the Arkansas River in Little Rock. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it helps boats and barges travel up and down the river by raising and lowering them between different water levels. The lock is 110 feet wide and 600 feet long—big enough to fit huge barges carrying goods as well as smaller fishing boats and pleasure craft. Watching the lock in action is a unique experience, as boats enter, the gates close, and the water level changes to move them safely through.
The dam next to the lock does more than just hold back water—it helps control flooding, keeps water levels steady, and supports shipping and recreation. By creating the Murray Lake pool, it makes this section of the river safer for boating and more enjoyable for fishing, kayaking, and other activities. Many industries in Arkansas also rely on the lock and dam to move materials by barge, making it a vital part of the state’s economy.
Visitors to the Murray Lock and Dam will also find plenty to enjoy in the surrounding area. The waters upstream are popular for catching bass, catfish, and crappie, while the shoreline is great for birdwatching and enjoying the river’s natural beauty. Safety is always important near the lock and dam—boaters should keep clear of restricted areas where strong currents can be dangerous. Whether you’re here to watch the big barges pass through, cast a line in the pool, or simply enjoy the view, the Murray Lock serves as both an essential piece of navigation infrastructure and a hub for outdoor activities in central Arkansas.
River Safety
Small craft safety on the Murray Lake pool of the Arkansas River begins with understanding the unique conditions of this section of water. The Murray Lock and Dam creates a wide, calm pool upstream, but boaters must always remember that it is still part of a navigable river system. Water levels and currents can change depending on dam releases and rainfall, which can affect small craft stability. Operators of kayaks, canoes, jon boats, and other lightweight vessels should wear properly fitted life jackets at all times and be mindful of barge traffic that uses the main navigation channel. Staying near the shoreline when larger vessels are present greatly reduces the risk of dangerous wakes or collisions.
Another important aspect of safety is awareness of restricted zones around the Murray Lock and Dam itself. Boaters must observe posted signs and keep a safe distance from both the intake side upstream and the tailrace below the dam. Strong currents, undertows, and sudden turbulence can develop near these areas, making them hazardous for smaller boats. Additionally, boaters should remain cautious when passing under bridges or navigating around wing dams, rock structures, and shallow areas, which can create unpredictable water movement. Keeping a reliable means of communication, such as a marine radio or charged cell phone, is also recommended in case of emergencies.
Finally, weather awareness plays a key role in safe boating on the Murray Lake pool. Thunderstorms can form quickly in central Arkansas, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and reduced visibility that pose significant risks to small craft. Checking forecasts before launching and keeping an eye on changing conditions can help boaters avoid being caught in dangerous situations. It’s also wise to carry essential safety gear, including navigation lights for evening operation, a whistle or horn for signaling, and a small anchor for holding position if needed. By combining preparation, situational awareness, and respect for river conditions, small craft operators can enjoy safe and rewarding experiences on the Murray Lake pool of the Arkansas River.
